I might have a new favorite Honda mini bike! This vintage Honda CT90 or Trail 90 was built as a rugged, small displacement every day adventure bike. Featuring a 90cc 4 speed engine (with high and low!!), collapsable grocery baskets, a steering lock, a removable auxiliary fuel tank, and more, this Honda Trail 90 is equipped for anything. In today's episode, we see if we can make the old Honda run and ride for the first time in years!
Thanks for Watching!

The old Trail 90 I grew up on needed a hot battery to idle right. The stator didn't seem to make enough power on its own. Try cleaning your carb with an electrostatic cleaner (about $100 at Harbor Freight) and putting in a new honda rebuild kit. That tank really needs to be better cleaned and maybe lined depending on how must rust there is. They are cool old bikes though.

The unnecessary rubber boot on the brake levers are to keep the dust out of the cable. Long term, dust will build on the inner cable, make it stiff or seized.

I had a Bridgestone 90, moped. It was too heavy to use the pedals for more than about 50 feet. Loved that quick little bike! So, this video made my day. Love Hondas! 👍😁 🏍️

Get a battery for this. It will run better. The battery is part of the system and it helps regulate the voltage. when you turned on the headlight, you may have blown the low beam because of the high voltage(you can also blow the other bulbs in the system this way). Cant wait to see the next video about this.

I had a trail 90 as a kid. I hated it. It's a girl's bike, for crying out loud. I wanted a real bike, with a clutch, and a gas tank where it's supposed to be. But I was 10, and had no was that or nothing. I tried to kill it. I really did. I never changed the oil, and I never adjusted the chain. I never touched the points, or the spark plug. I'd shift from hi to low range with my heel, while in motion. I jumped it (scariest thing ever) over ditches. That thing would not die. It never failed to start, never left me stranded. The seat would slap my butt every time I got it airborne, and the exhaust pipe rotted away, but that was the worst thing it ever did. We took that thing into some God-Awful places, and it never, ever quit. But you look stupid riding one! At about 13ish, I'd saved a little hay-baling and irrigation pipe moving money, and traded up (??) to a Honda CT125. It wasn't nearly as reliable as the 90, but at least it had a clutch and the gas tank was in the right place. But thankfully the CT125 died and I got my first XR, a 200, in 1980. I still hate the CT90, but now those friggin things are everywhere! My buddy has two of the darn things and thinks they're awesome! Time is proving, I guess, that they are indestructible, but as uncool now as ever! Anyway, the handlebars turn so you can get the bike inside a pickup least that's what my grandpa said when trying to explain why HE bought one voluntarily.

People used to haul these on a bumper mount on the front of their truck. The folding handle bars helped with clearance. In addition to the high low transfer case dual jetted carb allowed you to change jets by pulling a knob for over 5k feet. Cool.

3 circuits, idle to 1/4 throttle, 1/4 to 3/4, 3b4 to wot. The air fuel screw is idle to quarter, shims or lack of on the needle are quarter to 3quarter, main jets are the 3quarter to wot. Clean the carb, replace gaskets, orings, it’ll run like a champ.

Heh heh, that thing brings back memories! I had a '69 Trail 90, and it had both the hi-lo box plus a double sprocket on the back for 'super-low' range. You actually had to add in an extra piece of chain to reach around the larger sprocket (usually included with the tool kit). It would climb a wall if you could stay on it!🤣 I think the gas tank only held like .9 gallon of gas, and you could ride trails almost all day on that!😉 *EDIT:* I'm pretty sure that the CT90 like my old '66 Honda C-50 actually *need to have a good battery connected* to hold the ignition voltage down at higher rpm's. The stator/alternator puts out too much voltage for the coil/points setup, and it can't maintain accurate timing at high rpm's above 3K or so. Just an FYI. That's why you can't rev it up under full throttle.

An un coated paper business card is a great tool for cleaning the residue and sanding grit from the points after sanding or filing. If you find a good points file online, would you please leave a link to it in an upcoming video. I need a replacement and so far, the only place that I could find one was China. Not a fan of metal from Chinese companies. It's always been improperly heat treated or an inferior alloy. Their products will improve over time, just like the Japanese and ours have.

There's a 110 version also. Love mine! Suggestion #1 reline the tank, and use real oil because of the automatic clutch. The handlebars turn sideways so you can store it along the wall and it only takes up the width of the bike. Make sure you have a good battery in there or you'll blow all the bulbs (if you care about that).

that bike is battery ignition and must have one to maintain ignition timing.its too much to go into here, just go with adjust the valves .002intake,.004exhaust TDC compression.then adjust the timing chain, follow the manual.set points.014-.016 and check static timing, again see the manual. check plug cap resistance.take carb COMPLETELY APART, emulsion tube and all to clean properly.A new carb may be needed but I doubt it. I found that premium gas runs best on old hondas.don't abuse the 2 speed unit.

the trail 90/110 is the greatest multipurpose motorcycle ever built; simple, easy to ride, can go anywhere. Even the AU and NZ post used them to deliver mail. That's why they are known as postie bikes down under. My grandfathers CT110 had been in storage for 34 years, I got it running late last year and have been thrashing it around the farm since. Great bike for towing saplings and ripping around with my friends. Friend of mine told me the handle bar quick release was for putting the bike on the back of an RV on a cargo carrier but idk

Here in Australia, the postal service used these, they were called a CT90 (and later until 2004 ish the CT110). I made the mistake with my CT110 of running it with no battery, the regulator puts out max voltage and you'll blow all the globes, probably part of the reason why you've got no headlight, also tripped me out that the headlight runs on AC when everything else on the bike is DC. They're good fun though
